Mechanism of action
Dexmedetomidine binds to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors on nerve fibers, blocking pain signal transmission when delivered in the perineural space adjacent to target nerves. This produces extended sensory and motor blockade lasting several hours beyond the duration of conventional local anesthetics, reducing postoperative pain and opioid requirements.
