Mechanism of action
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that works by inhibiting sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers. This prevents the generation and propagation of action potentials, thereby blocking pain sensation in the area where it is applied topically. It has a rapid onset and is commonly used for localized pain relief on intact or damaged skin.
