Mechanism of action
As a progestin, norethindrone acetate acts primarily on progesterone receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to inhibit the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, thereby preventing ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus and alters the endometrial lining to create an inhospitable environment for sperm and embryo implantation. These combined effects make it effective for contraception and management of hormone-dependent conditions.
