Mechanism of action

Levobupivacaine is the S-enantiomer of bupivacaine, a long-acting amide local anesthetic. It reversibly binds to and blocks voltage-gated sodium channels on the inner surface of nerve cell membranes, preventing depolarization and nerve impulse transmission. When administered epidurally, it produces anesthesia and analgesia in the lower body by blocking sensory and motor nerves in the epidural space.
