Mechanism of action
As an ester-type local anesthetic, chloroprocaine reversibly inhibits sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory nerve fibers, thereby preventing depolarization and action potential propagation. When formulated as a 3% eye gel, it provides topical anesthesia to the ocular surface, numbing the cornea and conjunctiva for diagnostic or minor surgical procedures. The gel formulation allows prolonged contact and sustained anesthetic effect compared to solutions.
