Mechanism of action

Benzocaine works by reversibly inhibiting sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory nerve fibers, which suppresses the generation and propagation of action potentials. This results in local anesthesia and numbing of the affected tissue. At 20% concentration in topical formulation, it provides rapid onset anesthesia suitable for surface application.
