Mechanism of action
Senna and Cassia work by activating the muscarinic receptors in the intestinal smooth muscle, leading to increased peristalsis and bowel movements. This action is thought to be mediated by the anthraquinone glycosides present in these plants, which are metabolized to anthranoid compounds that stimulate the muscarinic receptors.
