Mechanism of action

Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) that slowly releases iodine in solution. The iodine penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes essential proteins and nucleic acids, leading to cell death. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and some protozoa, making it suitable for skin antisepsis and wound disinfection.
