Mechanism of action
Postmenopausal vaginal atrophy results from declining estrogen levels, causing vaginal dryness, irritation, and dyspareunia. Topical vaginal estrogen cream is applied directly to the vaginal epithelium, where it is absorbed locally to restore tissue elasticity, increase vaginal lubrication, and normalize the vaginal microenvironment. This localized delivery minimizes systemic estrogen exposure compared to oral hormone replacement therapy.
