Mechanism of action

Oxytocin is a neurohypophyseal hormone that acts as an agonist at oxytocin receptors, G-protein coupled receptors present on myometrial cells and lactating breast tissue. Receptor activation triggers intracellular calcium mobilization and smooth muscle contraction. In obstetrics, it induces or augments uterine contractions; in lactation, it promotes milk letdown reflex.
