Mechanism of action

Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug that forms platinum-DNA adducts, which prevent DNA replication and transcription, ultimately leading to cell death. This mechanism is particularly effective in rapidly dividing cancer cells. The addition of folinic acid and fluorouracil enhances the effectiveness of oxaliplatin by increasing the levels of thymidylate synthase inhibitors, which further disrupt DNA synthesis.
