Mechanism of action
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that works by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory nerve fibers. When infiltrated locally into tissue, it prevents the generation and propagation of action potentials in nociceptive (pain) neurons, thereby producing localized anesthesia. This allows surgical or procedural interventions to be performed without pain sensation in the infiltrated area.
