Mechanism of action

Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic that binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits the initiation of protein synthesis. This bacteriostatic mechanism is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). When formulated as an antimicrobial-lock solution, it is instilled into central venous catheters to prevent biofilm formation and catheter-related bloodstream infections.
