Mechanism of action
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that works by inhibiting sodium influx through sodium-selective channels in the nerve cell membrane, thereby preventing depolarization and blocking the generation and propagation of action potentials. This effect is reversible and concentration-dependent, allowing for temporary numbing of specific tissues without systemic effects when administered locally.
Approved indications
- Local anesthesia for infiltration, nerve block, and topical use
- Ventricular arrhythmias (intravenous formulation)
Common side effects
- Injection site reactions (pain, erythema)
- Allergic reactions (rare with amide lidocaine)
- Systemic toxicity (CNS effects: tremor, seizures)
- Cardiovascular effects (hypotension, arrhythmias) at high doses
- Methemoglobinemia (with topical use)
