Mechanism of action
Ivermectin selectively targets invertebrate-specific ion channels, particularly glutamate-gated chloride channels found in nematodes and arthropods. By binding to these channels, it increases chloride conductance, leading to hyperpolarization of nerve and muscle cells, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite. The drug has high selectivity for parasitic channels over mammalian GABA receptors due to structural differences.
