Mechanism of action

Sodium bicarbonate is a buffer that neutralizes excess hydrogen ions in the bloodstream, increasing serum pH and bicarbonate concentration. It is used to treat metabolic acidosis from various causes including renal failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, and drug overdoses. The alkalinizing effect can also enhance renal excretion of certain drugs and reduce hyperkalemia.
