Mechanism of action
By antagonizing muscarinic receptors on smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, hyoscine butylbromide decreases muscle contractions and spasmodic activity. This antispasmodic effect provides relief from cramping and pain associated with gastrointestinal disorders. The quaternary ammonium structure limits blood-brain barrier penetration, reducing central nervous system side effects compared to tertiary amines.
