Mechanism of action
Exparel contains bupivacaine encapsulated in liposomes, which allows for sustained release of the local anesthetic over 72 hours or longer compared to standard bupivacaine. The liposomal delivery system reduces the rate of systemic absorption while maintaining local anesthetic effect at the injection site, providing extended pain relief without repeated dosing.
