Mechanism of action
Diphenhydramine blocks H1 histamine receptors to reduce allergic symptoms and promote sedation. Phenylephrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that causes vasoconstriction to relieve nasal congestion. Dextromethorphan is a non-opioid cough suppressant that acts on the cough center in the medulla. The placebo arm allows for comparison of symptomatic relief.
