Mechanism of action

Desogestrel is a third-generation synthetic progestin used in hormonal contraception. It works primarily by inhibiting the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge necessary for ovulation, while also increasing cervical mucus viscosity to impede sperm penetration and thinning the endometrium to prevent implantation. The luteal phase formulation delivers the progestin during the latter part of the menstrual cycle.
