Mechanism of action

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is a synthetic progestin that acts on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis to inhibit the LH surge required for ovulation. It also alters the endometrium and increases cervical mucus viscosity, creating multiple barriers to conception. The injection provides sustained contraceptive effect for approximately 12 weeks per dose.
