Mechanism of action

Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal that inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, blocking the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. This disrupts the structural integrity of the fungal cell membrane, causing leakage of cellular contents and fungal cell death. The vaginal ovule formulation delivers the drug directly to the site of infection.
