Mechanism of action
As an ester-type local anesthetic, chloroprocaine reversibly inhibits sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, thereby preventing depolarization and action potential generation. This results in loss of sensation in the infiltrated tissue. Chloroprocaine is rapidly metabolized by plasma pseudocholinesterase, giving it a short duration of action compared to amide local anesthetics.
Approved indications
- Local infiltration anesthesia for minor surgical procedures
- Nerve blocks and regional anesthesia
Common side effects
- Allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis)
- Methemoglobinemia (with benzocaine-containing formulations; less common with chloroprocaine)
