Mechanism of action
Botox cleaves SNARE proteins required for acetylcholine vesicle fusion and release at motor nerve terminals. This results in flaccid paralysis of injected muscles, lasting 3–4 months before neuromuscular junction recovery. The effect is used therapeutically to reduce muscle hyperactivity and cosmetically to reduce dynamic wrinkles.
