Mechanism of action

Phenylephrine is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that causes vasoconstriction and increases systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure. Ephedrine is a mixed alpha and beta adrenergic agonist that increases heart rate, contractility, and blood pressure through multiple mechanisms. When administered as a bolus, these agents rapidly restore blood pressure in acute hypotensive states.
