Mechanism of action
Benzoyl peroxide generates reactive oxygen species that kill acne-causing bacteria (particularly Cutibacterium acnes) and promote skin cell turnover. Sulfur enhances this effect through its own antimicrobial properties and ability to break down keratin, helping to unclog pores and reduce comedone formation. Together, these agents work synergistically to reduce bacterial colonization and normalize skin shedding.
