Mechanism of action
As an ester-type local anesthetic, tetracaine works by inhibiting sodium influx through voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, thereby stabilizing the membrane and preventing depolarization. This action reversibly blocks pain sensation and other nerve conduction in the area where applied. The gel formulation allows topical delivery for surface anesthesia of mucous membranes and skin.
