Mechanism of action
Pitocin is a synthetic form of oxytocin, a naturally occurring hormone produced by the posterior pituitary gland. It acts as an agonist at oxytocin receptors on uterine smooth muscle, triggering rhythmic contractions necessary for labor progression. It is also used to control postpartum hemorrhage by promoting sustained uterine contraction.
