Mechanism of action

Morphine is a mu-opioid receptor agonist that decreases pain perception by acting on opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. It also produces sedation, euphoria, and respiratory depression through central nervous system effects. The drug is a naturally occurring alkaloid from the opium poppy and remains a gold-standard opioid analgesic for moderate to severe pain.
