Mechanism of action
Sodium is an essential electrolyte critical for maintaining osmotic balance, nerve conduction, and muscle function. Intravenous or oral sodium replacement restores depleted sodium stores in patients with hyponatremia or ongoing sodium losses due to renal, gastrointestinal, or other causes. The dosing of 5 mEq/kg/day is a standard pediatric replacement regimen.
