Mechanism of action
Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial agent combining silver's broad-spectrum bactericidal properties with sulfadiazine's sulfonamide mechanism. Silver ions denature bacterial proteins and interfere with cellular respiration, while sulfadiazine competitively inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, blocking folate synthesis essential for bacterial growth. This dual mechanism provides synergistic antimicrobial activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
