Mechanism of action

Sevoflurane is a volatile halogenated ether that potentiates GABA-A receptor function and inhibits NMDA glutamate receptors, leading to rapid anesthetic induction and maintenance. Propofol is an intravenous phenolic compound that similarly enhances GABA-A receptor-mediated chloride influx while inhibiting excitatory neurotransmission, producing sedation and anesthesia with rapid onset and offset.
