Mechanism of action

Sevoflurane acts as a general anesthetic by potentiating GABA-A receptors and inhibiting NMDA glutamate receptors, leading to depression of the central nervous system. The step-up concentration protocol involves gradually increasing the inspired concentration to facilitate smooth induction and reduce adverse hemodynamic effects. This titration approach is particularly useful in pediatric anesthesia and in patients at risk for cardiovascular instability.
