Mechanism of action
Lactated Ringer's is an intravenous crystalloid fluid containing sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate in physiologic concentrations. The lactate is metabolized by the liver to bicarbonate, providing mild alkalinizing capacity. It restores intravascular volume and electrolyte balance, improving tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery in hypovolemic states.
Approved indications
- Acute dehydration and hypovolemia
- Hemorrhagic shock and trauma resuscitation
- Burn injury fluid replacement
- Perioperative fluid maintenance and replacement
Common side effects
- Hyperkalemia (with renal impairment or massive transfusion)
- Hyperchloremic acidosis (with excessive administration)
- Pulmonary edema (with fluid overload)
- Hyponatremia (with excessive hypotonic fluid administration)
Key clinical trials
- Evaluation of Allogenic Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) Injection Therapy for Refractory Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD) Unresponsive to Conventional Treatments (PHASE2)
- The Effect of Clonidine in Glycemia During Coronary Artery Bypass Graft With Cardiopulmonary By-pass (PHASE4)
