Mechanism of action
Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) that acts as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. The iodine component penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes proteins and nucleic acids, leading to cell death. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and some protozoa.
