Mechanism of action
Antithyroid agents block the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which is essential for incorporating iodine into thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). By inhibiting this enzyme, these drugs decrease the production and release of excess thyroid hormones, thereby reducing the metabolic effects of hyperthyroidism. Common agents in this class include propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole.
