Mechanism of action

Misoprostol binds to prostaglandin receptors on uterine smooth muscle, increasing intracellular calcium and promoting myometrial contractions. It also softens and dilates the cervix by promoting collagen remodeling and increasing local blood flow. In the preoperative setting, vaginal administration allows for sustained local drug delivery and gradual cervical preparation.
