Mechanism of action

Pregnancy tests work by identifying hCG, a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after conception. The test uses antibodies that bind to hCG molecules, generating a visible signal (line, color change, or digital readout) when hCG is present above a threshold concentration. Tests can be performed on urine or serum samples, with serum tests generally more sensitive at earlier stages of pregnancy.
