Mechanism of action

Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that works through the bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal properties of iodine. When applied topically, iodine penetrates microbial cell walls and membranes, oxidizing essential proteins and nucleic acids, thereby rapidly inactivating bacteria, viruses, fungi, and some protozoa. The povidone carrier provides sustained release of iodine and improves stability.
