Mechanism of action

Dextromethorphan acts on the cough center in the medulla to suppress cough reflex. Diphenhydramine blocks H1 histamine receptors, reducing allergic symptoms and providing sedation. Phenylephrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that causes vasoconstriction to relieve nasal congestion. Cocoa provides soothing demulcent properties to the throat.
