Mechanism of action
Phloroglucin reduces smooth muscle contractions in the gastrointestinal and biliary tracts by blocking phosphodiesterase enzymes and interfering with calcium-dependent muscle contraction mechanisms. This leads to decreased spasm and pain in conditions affecting the digestive system. The drug has been used clinically for decades, particularly in Europe and Asia, for symptomatic relief of abdominal pain and cramping.
