Mechanism of action

Permethrin acts as a neurotoxin by binding to voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes of insects and mites, prolonging their opening and causing repetitive neuronal firing. This leads to paralysis and death of the parasite. The drug is selective for arthropod nervous systems due to differences in sodium channel structure and metabolism compared to mammals.
