Mechanism of action

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a non-absorbable osmotic agent that retains water in the intestinal lumen, increasing stool bulk and promoting peristalsis. The electrolyte component (sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, sodium sulfate) maintains electrolyte balance and prevents net fluid absorption or secretion. The split-dose regimen (2L the evening before and 2L the morning of procedure) optimizes bowel cleansing while improving patient tolerability.
