Mechanism of action

Oxantel pamoate acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist in parasitic nematodes, leading to sustained depolarization and spastic paralysis of the worm musculature. This immobilizes the parasites, allowing them to be expelled from the gastrointestinal tract. It is particularly effective against hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) and Trichuris trichiura.
