Mechanism of action
Catheter lock solutions are instilled into the lumen of central venous catheters when not in active use to prevent thrombosis and infection. Normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) is the most basic formulation, maintaining catheter patency through osmotic balance and mechanical flushing action. While less sophisticated than anticoagulant or antimicrobial lock solutions, normal saline remains a standard maintenance approach for short-term catheter care.
