Mechanism of action
The estrogen and progestin components work synergistically to inhibit the luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) surges required for ovulation. Additionally, the progestin thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and alters the endometrium to prevent implantation, providing multiple layers of contraceptive protection.
