Mechanism of action

MCT/LCT lipid emulsions are used in intravenous nutrition to deliver both rapidly metabolizable medium-chain fatty acids and essential long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. MCTs are more readily oxidized for energy, while LCTs provide essential linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids necessary for cellular function and membrane integrity. This combination formulation aims to optimize both energy delivery and essential nutrient provision in patients unable to receive adequate oral or enteral nutrition.
