Mechanism of action

Fluoride ions are incorporated into the hydroxyapatite crystal structure of tooth enamel, making it more resistant to demineralization by acids produced by oral bacteria. The fluoride also reduces the metabolic activity of cariogenic bacteria, decreasing their ability to produce acids that erode teeth. This dual mechanism strengthens enamel and reduces cavity formation.
