Mechanism of action

Malathion irreversibly phosphorylates acetylcholinesterase at the neuromuscular junction of lice and other parasitic arthropods, preventing breakdown of acetylcholine and leading to excessive cholinergic stimulation, paralysis, and death of the parasite. The shampoo formulation allows topical application directly to affected areas of the scalp and hair.
