Mechanism of action
Lactase deficiency leads to lactose intolerance, where undigested lactose causes osmotic diarrhea and fermentation-related gas and bloating. Oral lactase enzyme supplementation provides exogenous enzyme activity to hydrolyze lactose in the intestinal lumen before it can cause symptoms. This allows individuals with lactase deficiency to tolerate dairy products without gastrointestinal distress.
